Dear Graduation Project Judges: For my graduation project I chose to write, and illustrate a short series of books that could help children learn how to read. I chose this project because I think that it is important that children have at least basic reading skills before they start kindergarten, they don’t necessarily have to be able to read a whole book by then, but they should have some reading skills, they should be able to recognize and even write some simple words. I learned that even though I can draw cartoons, drawing letters and keeping them all at almost the exact same size is harder than I thought it would be. I also learned that if I am going to continue to choose things that are this complicated then I need to stop procrastinating and just get things done, I tend to procrastinate more often than not, so completing this project was more difficult than it should have been. I think the easiest thing about this project was coloring the pictures to go in the books, because there wasn’t any measuring I had to do, no double checking lengths, all I had to do was color. The hardest part was drawing the letters for the first book because if the measurements weren’t exactly right, it would throw off the entire drawing and I would have to either go back and fix it if I hadn’t gone to far off, or completely start over on the drawing. And as for it benefiting me later in life, I don’t know that it will, simply because the career field I chose has nothing to do with writing or illustrating books for small children, but if I have children later in life then these books and the work it took to write them may benefit me while teaching my own children how to read.
